Keeping it Advent

[mp_row] [mp_span col=”12″] The Christmas season is almost always so full, hectic, and busy.  Its easy to lose sight of what the season is truly about.  Because contrary to how it seems, its not about the parties or baking or gifts or ugly sweater contests.  So, I need the daily reminder that this month is Advent, a season of expectantly awaiting the birth of Christ. Right now, ya’ll, I just need more Jesus and less bling-bling craziness.  And because its me and the ability to slow things down isn’t one of my strongest attributes, I need easy ways to keep December about Advent. How was your thanksgiving?!  I so very much hope that it was wonderful!  Have you already launched into Christmas land?  I noticed a lot of houses around us already have their trees and lights and decorations!  We just aren’t that with it.  Well actually, we scooted out of town right after the holiday, so I will use that as my excuse;) Anyhow, the holiday season is always a full-full stretch of time!  How many holiday events are already on your calendar?  And, its not even December yet…. Cranberry Walnut Sour Cream Coffee Cake

Streusel topping, streusel topping, streusel topping!!  When something has a streusel topping don’t we all do that silent (or not-so-silent) chant!?  I mean have you ever heard someone say, “I like coffee cake, but I don’t like the streusel topping.”?  Of course not!!  Surely no human has ever uttered such nonsense.  At least I don’t see any plausible reason why someone would.  Because, come on now, no one hates the streusel topping. Honey Balsamic Brussel Sprouts

As a child, if my mom had turned brussel sprouts into roasty, sweet, salty, and caramelized little nuggets, I would have had a very different opinion of them.  I grew up in the era of flavorless steamed veggies.  So as a kid, I was not much of a brussel sprout fan.  Veggies were something we had to eat.  No one put any effort into making them an enjoyable part of the meal. My family’s Thanksgiving dinner is at 1:00pm.  It has been for as long as I can remember.  Someone suggested 3:00 last year, and a full blown email-chain mutiny ensued.  Which reminds me, my family needs a lesson on not hitting “reply all” to all communication.  Needless to say, we ate at one.
