Pomegranate Kale Salad with Parmesan Vinaigrette

You guys, do you think I can get bonus holiday cheer points for making the most festive looking salad?  Pretty please?  The holiday season has only just begun and I am already in desperate need of bonus “cheer” points.  Tim has called me “the grinch” roughly 10 times a day since Thanksgiving for offenses such as disliking multi-colored christmas lights, giant blow-up santa claus lawn decor, and eggnog.  So, ya’ll, I need to get my reputation back into the holiday black.  Pun intended. A dark green salad the color of evergreen trees flecked with sparkling ruby colored jewels is about the most festive salad I know.  I made it the…

Keeping it Advent

[mp_row] [mp_span col=”12″] The Christmas season is almost always so full, hectic, and busy.  Its easy to lose sight of what the season is truly about.  Because contrary to how it seems, its not about the parties or baking or gifts or ugly sweater contests.  So, I need the daily reminder that this month is Advent, a season of expectantly awaiting the birth of Christ. Right now, ya’ll, I just need more Jesus and less bling-bling craziness.  And because its me and the ability to slow things down isn’t one of my strongest attributes, I need easy ways to keep December about Advent. So, I’m popping in an extra post…

Cranberry Walnut Sour Cream Coffee Cake

Streusel topping, streusel topping, streusel topping!!  When something has a streusel topping don’t we all do that silent (or not-so-silent) chant!?  I mean have you ever heard someone say, “I like coffee cake, but I don’t like the streusel topping.”?  Of course not!!  Surely no human has ever uttered such nonsense.  At least I don’t see any plausible reason why someone would.  Because, come on now, no one hates the streusel topping. Now that we have that settled, lets move on to more pressing matters like the fact that my dog got a haircut today, no longer looks looks homeless, and has regained her title as the cutest little munchkin…

Gingerbread Cake with Rye Flour

Have you baked with Rye flour yet?  I posted a pumpkin almond butter cookie recipe earlier this week that also uses rye flour.  And be prepared for a number of upcoming rye flour recipes!  If you like dense, gooey texture in baked goods, then we will get along just fine.  And also, you will love baking with rye flour! Ok, prepare yourselves for some super nerdy baking science. Let me just get my lab coat and thick rimmed glasses.  I want to look official while dropping some serious rye flour knowledge.  Ready? Rye flour contains less gluten than wheat flours and the gluten that it contains is less elastic.  When…

Cardamom Morning Buns

Ok, friends.  Lets have an honest chat.  There are only a handful of coffee shops in the world that make me swoon. As you know, I am a Seattlite.  And like any good Seattlite, I love good coffee!  A properly made latte is a thing of beauty.  So of course, I have my go-to favorites with perfectly drawn espresso shots and velvety smooth steamed milk. A latte is fantastic.  Don’t get me wrong!  I will absolutely cross town for the perfect latte!  But why-oh-why do the perfect latte and an awe inspiring pastry case seem to be mutually exclusive variables?  I can name a half dozen amazing bakeries in the city.  And…
