How to win cool points by put a “twist” in the classic pizza party

Hosting a pizza party already earns you a hefty amount of “cool points”  – especially if there is a movie, popcorn, and possibly some sort of whip-cream-clad ice-cream sunday for dessert.  Ok, maybe I just named my favorite birthday party from childhood, and quite possibly my idea of the perfect friday night-in to this day… But lets pretend we are just focusing on the kids here. So pizza… Obviously there are roughly a million topping options.  Sauce. No sauce. Sausage. Pepperoni. Hawaiian. Not to mention the dozens of different cheese options…  You get the point.  Regardless of your pizza selecting skills, someone in attendance’s favorite combo will undoubtedly be missed.…

Girls’ Night in 5 – Roasted Pear Crumble

I’m jumping right in with a second post to the Girls’ Night in 5 series because the next week I’m launching into a What to make for Easter series… And as much as I love Girls’ Night, it just doesn’t jive with the overall theme of Easter brunch, carrot cake, asparagus, and english peas.  But, it will resume its monthly appearance in the latter half of April. I’ll keep today’s post brief… but, continuing with super simple Girls’ Night-in recipes, I am taking a more grown up and refined approach to Apple Crisp with this Roasted Pear Crumble!  Oh and this version uses only 5 ingredients (with an optional 6th)…

This is the first post of a monthly “how-to” series containing Girls’ Night friendly recipes with 5 or fewer ingredients and no more than 5 minutes of active prep!  This series is part of my mission to simplify entertaining to encourage readers to invest in their community through hosting and loving people well. So this post…

A Pivot in Direction and Apple Pie

I am passionate about food, my people, and any combination of the two. I had no intention of started yet another food blog.  The internet is pretty saturated with a lot of great ones already.  Instead, I envisioned a place that equips readers with the ability and confidence to embrace his or her community through hosting!  I don’t mean fancy multi-course meals but laid-back, kick-off-your-shoes, casual gatherings where everyone feels welcome to be themselves.  I’m not fancy enough for table linens, worrying about napkin placement, or discussions of “which fork do I use?” anyways. My vision for almostproperly.com was to make modern entertaining and cooking for a crowd easier, less…

January’s Entertaining Tips: Raw Oyster Tasting

Ok, have we all been to wine tasting parties?  Or what about the wine and cheese pairing parties?  Here in Seattle, beer and/or hard cider tastings are having a moment in the sun. And I’m willing to bet most of us have been to at least some iteration of one of the above. Here is the thing, I love the idea of a party surrounding the exploration and sampling of something new!!  Who doesn’t love trying yummy new things??  Plus, I love interactive parties that encourage people to chat it up about food/flavors etc.  Its great especially when not all of the guests know each other.  Commonality (or friendly disagreement)…
